In the electronics industry, the use of ESD safe
hand tools is a standard procedure in preventing electrostatic damage to
sensitive devices. However, most ESD safe hand tools with static dissipative
handles are made from carbon steel. Therefore, they are not suitable for use in
a monitored Cleanroom environment, such as is required in the manufacture of
semiconductors, since agressive cleaning requirements can degrade the carbon steel tool or the tool's handle and introduce
ferrous and particulate contamination. The irony is that semiconductors and other precision electronics can be especially sensitive to ESD events.
The materials used (quartz, glass, ceramic, plastic) are inherently charge generating, and the miniaturization of these devices, where technology has multiplied the number of circuits and decreased the size, increases the ESD potential.
In certain applications, where the use of stainless steel hand tools is specified to meet cleanliness requirements, conductive handles can be used to reduce the likelihood of ESD damage.
When held by a grounded operator, stainless steel handles on steritools can create a continous path to ground to neutralize the electrostatic charge.
